I love the "British Pub." What makes a true pub, you ask? Well, it has to do with the quaint, cozy atmosphere, the real ales on tap, and the almost ever present grumbling "regular" posted at the bar. Most importantly, though, it is the unique pub sign that tells you when you've found the right spot. I have always been fascinated with the intricate signs, and the pubs they represent. Dating back to the 1300's when King Richard II proclaimed "Whosoever shall brew ale in the town with intention of selling it must hang out a sign, otherwise he shall forfeit his ale." Most of these "public houses" were in rural England, so many of their patrons were illiterate; inn keepers had to make literal pictures of their pub names so that the townes people could recognise them! These signs today represent a unique, and prevalent part of British culture.
PUBlog Rating System:
1 Pint = Stop in for a drink
2 Pints = Stay for a few more
3 Pints = Call your friends
4 Pints = "Honey, I'm gonna be late tonight"
5 Pints = I could stay here all night!
